On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, the Bachelor Programme in Mathematics from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Tanjungpura (UNTAN) Pontianak conducted a community service activity. This event, a workshop titled “Enhancing Mathematical Literacy Through Problem-Solving Training Using Mathematics Applications,” took place at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak. The activity aimed to introduce the Bachelor Programme in Mathematics, provide knowledge about Artificial Intelligence (AI), and socialize the Mathematics Competition (KOMET) to the students and teachers at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak.

The event saw participation from 35 students and 3 teachers from SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak. They were accompanied by ten lecturers and eight students from UNTAN’s FMIPA Mathematics Study Program, who served as speakers and facilitators. The event began with an opening by Suryani, the event host, followed by welcoming remarks from Mr. Deni Hamdani and the Head of the Mathematics Study Program, Dr. Bayu Prihandono, S.Si., M.Sc.

During the Bachelor Programme in Mathematics introduction, Dr. Bayu Prihandono shared details about the program’s vision and mission, its curriculum, and the career prospects for Mathematics graduates. He also emphasized the importance of mastering modern technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) in today’s education and industry. He highlighted that Mathematics program graduates are prepared for academic roles and capable of contributing to AI development, which is increasingly relevant in this digital era.

Following the program introduction, the event continued with a presentation on artificial intelligence in mathematics learning by Mr. Fransiskus Fran, M.Si., a lecturer from the Bachelor Programme in Mathematics at FMIPA UNTAN. Mr. Fran explained the fundamentals of AI, from machine learning concepts to their application in mathematics learning apps. He also demonstrated several AI applications that students and teachers can use to help solve math problems, providing interactive explanations and encouraging students to practice using these AI-based applications directly.

The event also included a socialization of the Mathematics Competition (KOMET), a competition organized by the Mathematics Student Association of the FMIPA UNTAN Mathematics Study Program. KOMET aims to boost students’ interest and talent in mathematics. This outreach is expected to foster a competitive spirit and a desire to learn mathematics among students, while also developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are highly relevant in the digital age.

Through the successful execution of this activity, the Bachelor Programme in Mathematics at FMIPA UNTAN has demonstrated its commitment to supporting educational development in Pontianak. This is especially evident in its efforts to leverage artificial intelligence technology to enhance the quality of mathematics learning in schools.
